My parents never got me one...Is it dumb that I want to buy one of these for myself?

If you want it, are willing to work for it, and think it would bring you happiness / satisfaction; go for it. Everyone has something that makes them feel better - it isn't stupid. I once knew a professional athlete who did needle point to relax - since he was an All-Pro lineman in the NFL, I don't know many who called him stupid.
